Jay Coughlan is the founder of Nuclear Watch New Mexico who through comprehensive research, public education, and effective citizen action, Nuclear Watch New Mexico seeks to promote safety and environmental protection at regional nuclear facilities; mission diversification away from nuclear weapons programs; greater accountability and cleanup in the nation-wide nuclear weapons complex; and consistent U.S. leadership toward a world free of nuclear weapons. Archbishop John Wester of the Santa Fe Archdiocese who made a visit to Hiroshima and Nagasaki that included participation in memorial ceremonies, meetings with survivors (hibakusha), and discussions with key religious and civic leaders. As part of the Silver City CLAY Festival, the WNMU McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art will host a photography exhibition by Ann McMahon, a local photographer who documented the mining history of the region. The opening reception at WNMU Francis McCray Gallery is on Tuesday, July 12, at 5 p.m. Ann McMahon – Frozen Windows From the Past runs through July 17. Beginning in 2012, Ann McMahon accepted the opportunity to photographically document Grant County’s mining history and mineral wealth. To date, more than one hundred Master Images have been produced, many of them of history that no longer exits. Mariachi Plata de WNMU and Mariachi Los Camperos at ¡Fiesta Latina!
For the ¡Fiesta Latina! 2022 welcome performance, the university’s student ensemble will open for the world’s only Grammy award-winning mariachi. Western New Mexico University Cultural Affairs worked with Mariachi Plata de WNMU Director Bryant Chaffino to bring Mariachi Los Camperos to campus during ¡Fiesta Latina!, which kicks off Thursday, June 16, with a free nighttime musical performance by both groups. Mariachi Los Camperos was founded in 1961 by Jose Natividad “Nati” Cano Ruiz, who played a fundamental role in the development of mariachi music in the U.S. by training and mentoring new generations of mariachi musicians. A visionary leader who wanted to take mariachi performances beyond customary locations such as cantinas and into concert halls. Nati Cano fulfilled his dream by presenting Los Camperos, which in 1964 became was the first mariachi to perform in Carnegie Hall. The group has performed for over 60 years on stage and television, including in motion pictures like “Sex in the City 2” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.” The award-winning Mariachi Plata de WNMU is the only competitive university mariachi in New Mexico. One of three musical ensembles in the WNMU music program, Mariachi Plata allows students to continue with their creative passion and build their skills while majoring in another field. At WNMU, mariachis are encouraged to be themselves while representing their musical tradition as best as possible. The performance begins at 8 p.m. and will take place at Regents Square on the WNMU campus. Admission is free.

¡Fiesta Latina! Virtual Artisan Mercado
The core feature of ¡Fiesta Latina! at Western New Mexico University is the Artisan Mercado, which is being held virtually this year and which highlights craftspeople who’ve carried on ancient handcraft traditions and have the ability to offer their art through modern technology. In what would be its fourth year, ¡Fiesta Latina! continues to engage border communities with our neighbors to the south while protecting the health of people on both sides of the border. Western New Mexico University hopes to again host the three-day family event on campus in 2021. In the meantime, visit FiestaLatina.org to shop the virtual mercado.
|
| 06/19/2020 – 06/21/2020 All Day |
Canceled: ¡Fiesta Latina! 2020
WNMU Cultural Affairs, in conjunction with the WNMU President’s Office, has made the difficult decision to cancel ¡Fiesta Latina! 2020. Given that there is no assurance as of now that large gatherings will be allowed by June, coupled with the logistics of an event this size, which require an enormous amount of pre-planning and coordination with people inside Mexico, making it happen has become less and less feasible. ¡Nos vemos en 2021! As promised, Western New Mexico University is offering a Virtual Artisan Mercado highlighting craftspeople who’ve carried on ancient handcraft traditions and have the ability to offer their art through modern technology. Visit FiestaLatina.org to shop the virtual mercado. A free event for the entire family!!Friday: 4 – 10 p.m. The signature event of WNMU, Fiesta Latina, provides an opportunity for border communities to engage with our neighbors to the south, through celebration and collaboration. Throughout the 3 day event, participants have the opportunity to explore Latin culture, rhythms, flavors and artisan crafts on the beautiful Western New Mexico University campus set in the mountains of the Southwest. This family event is now in its fourth year, hosting the Artisan Mercado featuring 40 traditional master artisans who travel to New Mexico from all across Mexico. This year we are highlighting the artisans of Michoacán. Artists are chosen by jury selection process, on the basis of several criteria: all art must be completely handmade by the artist, the use of multi-generational traditions, the use of “natural” pigments/materials, and overall quality. Artisans are selected to provide a wide array of crafts, including textiles, jewelry, pottery, bead work, copper work, and more. Free events include a music stage featuring entertainment throughout the weekend. Acts include: Northern New Mexico’s Cuarenta y Cinco playing a free Friday night opening concert. Also appearing are Ballet Folklorico Alfaro from El Paso, Mariachi Plata, Paseo del Norte Folklorico dancers, and cumbia by Sonido Cachimbo from Juarez. The Transcending Borders Film/Discussion Series (at Light Hall Theater) showcases documentaries on traditional Mexican crafts and techniques, with discussions hosted by visiting artisans. There will be children’s crafting activities throughout the weekend in the dedicated Children’s Tent and demonstrations by visiting artisans. New to the festival this year will be the Charro presentation on Sunday, June 21. Ticketed events include a tequila tasting, offering tastes of 10 fine tequilas and a jarito handcrafted in Mexico; The headline show on Saturday night, June 20, featuring Elida Reyna y Avante and the Lucky Joe Band in concert. Mexican food trucks and the Stadium Bar will be open throughout the weekend. Or call 575-538-6469 |

Braceros Art Opening
An exhibit of sculpture, painting, and historic photographs telling an under-appreciated part of New Mexico history, “Braceros – Melding History and Art”, will open at the Miller Library on October 15 at 6 p.m. with a reception. The Braceros Program ran from 1942 through 1964 to meet the demands of agriculture and the railroad industry that was hit by a massive labor shortage caused by World War II. This effort to help feed the U.S. during World War II brought over four and a half million legal migrant workers to the United States from Mexico. The exhibit features sculptural works by LeMarbe accompanied by paintings by Las Cruces artist Jeri Desrochers and historical research of Raymond Cobos as well as photographs from the Smithsonian Collection. A reception in the MEChA Building with food and drink will follow the event.

Women in the Arts: Marietta Patricia Leis
Edwina and Charles Milner Women in the Arts Lecture & Exhibit 6:30 pm | Lecture Parotti Hall FREE event. Open to the public. ABOUT THE ARTIST “My work encompasses multiple media, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, and installation. There is always an element of the sensory in my art—a texture, a color, a deep space—something to engage the senses of the viewer. The intention of the work is to contemplate boundaries, edges, and limits. My abstract color fields run the risk of invisibility, but silence, patience, and deep listening is fundamental to the satisfaction of the viewer.” —Marietta Patricia Leis Marietta Patricia Leis was born in Newark, New Jersey USA. She has worked as a professional artist for 30+ years. She has lived in New York, Los Angeles, Perugia (Italy) and now lives and works in New Mexico. She is a painter whose work has evolved from very complex abstractions to reductive color fields inspired by my Eastern Studies and nature. She has participated in Artist Residencies both in the US and abroad. Leis has shown her work abroad in Thailand, China, Portugal and England as well as in the US in museums and galleries et al. Private and public collections hold her work. She earned her MFA from the University of New Mexico. Co-Sponsors

Hometown Hollywood
For almost twenty years, Silver City was home to the agent for some of stage and screen’s biggest names including Steve McQueen, Kirk Douglas, Natalie Wood, Gregory Peck, Paul Anka, Julie London, Dick Clark, Johnny Mathis, Paul Newman, Kenny Rogers, Nancy Sinatra, and many more. David Gershenson is coming back to Silver City as a guest of the Silver Screen Society, and David will share some of his fondest and funniest memories of his 60-year career representing some of the entertainment industry’s brightest stars. Dr. Joe Shepard will interview David on Western New Mexico University’s Light Hall stage, and several film clips will be shown. The storytelling will begin at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, March 18, 2018, followed by “Dinner with David” at Dr. Shepard’s residence at 7:30 p.m. David started his own PR/marketing firm representing actors, singers, musicians, producers, directors, TV show and commercial production companies. He was the personal manager for Bobby Darin, Burt Reynolds and Terry Bradshaw. David revived Burt Reynolds’ career with a unique concept: his centerfold in Playgirl magazine. He also produced plays and movies. Tickets are available at WNMU’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Morning Star. The reminiscing and clips tickets cost $10. The dinner – including appetizers, wine, entrée and dessert – is $60 per person (includes stage interview). Dinner seating is limited, so the deadline for dinner reservations is March 15. Benefitting the Silver Screen Society, Hometown Hollywood is sponsored by Western New Mexico University and underwritten by the Rotary Club of Silver City. Call 575-537-5988 for more information.

Women In The Arts: Star York
Edwina & Charles Milner Women in the Arts Lecture Series: Star Liana York, Bronze Artist Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 pm, Light Hall Student Workshop scheduled for Friday, April 22. Long recognized as one of the premiere figurative Western and wildlife sculptors in the country, she has won numerous Best of Show Awards, and has been featured on numerous magazine covers. On its 30th anniversary, Southwest Art selected her as one of the most influential artists profiled in their magazine over the previous three decades. About Star Liana York Star Liana York grew up in Maryland, daughter of a professional ballerina and a talented woodworker. Always displaying a strong affinity for animals as a child, she purchased her first horse as a teenager and began competing in speed events and rodeos. She operated a horse boarding and training business through college (graduating form the University of Maryland in Studio Art) but always dreamed of coming out West. This dream was realized about 30 years ago when she located a casting facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico, moved there and has used the foundry ever since. Star tells the story of her life and her discoveries through her bronzes. Since moving to the Southwest in 1985, she has created a vast body of work that reflects her boundless interest in the people, animals, environment and history of the region. A continuing source of inspiration comes from her exploration of the native peoples of the area – Navajo, apache, Hopi and Pueblo – in addition to the wildlife and unique rock art. She is a part of a new group of artists who are reworking the stereotypical Western subjects. “Using Native American imagery as a vehicle for expressing certain themes,” she states, “carries great symbolic and emotional impact. The Western myth is very much a part of our collective psyche as Americans and, as such, communicates a strong message.” Inspired also by the mysteries ad mythology of ancient sacred sites, the artist brings a special sensitivity to capturing her subjects’ cultural identity, whether indigenous or ranch life, and celebrates them by preserving her observations through her medium – bronze. Star says, “When a character emerges from a work I am sculpting, I feel touched at a deeply intimate, subconscious level. It is the essence in a work of art that makes it intensely personal and entirely universal at the same time. I’m much more comfortable with animals. I trust the emotion of animals and horses. I understand where they are coming from and their behavior is honest. Read more
