Archbishop Wester

The Immorality of Nuclear Weapons

Archbishop Wester traces the Catholic Church’s evolution from conditional acceptance of “deterrence” to Pope Francis’ declaration that nuclear weapons are immoral.

Jay Coghlan

So-called “Deterrence” is the Threat

The US and Russian governments have always rejected “minimal deterrence” in favor of nuclear warfighting capabilities. That is what is driving the U.S.’ $2 trillion “modernization” program, which is really a nuclear weapons forever program.

Jay Coghlan is the founder of Nuclear Watch New Mexico, an organization that through comprehensive research, public education, and effective citizen action seeks to: promote safety and environmental protection at regional nuclear facilities with mission of diversifying away from nuclear weapons programs; greater accountability and cleanup in the nation-wide nuclear weapons complex; and consistent U.S. leadership toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

Archbishop of Santa Fe John C. Wester made a visit to Hiroshima and Nagasaki that included participation in memorial ceremonies, meetings with survivors (hibakusha), and discussions with key religious and civic leaders.
