President’s Chamber Music Series: Julia Keefe – The Mildred Bailey Project
General Admission $20 | Students, Faculty and Staff admitted free with a WNMU ID.
Jazz vocalist Julia Keefe—of Nez Perce heritage—presents The Mildred Bailey Project, a tribute to Mildred Bailey, the Native American singer who became one of the first women to sing lead with a big band in the early 1930s.
In this project, released in January 2024, Keefe revisits Bailey’s repertoire through fresh arrangements—small-ensemble settings that echo the big-band era while highlighting her own voice and heritage.
Beyond honoring Bailey’s musical legacy, Keefe’s work brings focus to broader themes of recognition and representation in jazz—highlighting how Indigenous artists have shaped the genre.
